Item Details

"In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable"--

Stephen King at his best. I wish he would write more stories like this. Great read!

What people forget is that Mr. king is a superb writer. I've enjoyed every single one of his books, including those written under a different name----except for the Dark Tower series.

Highly recommended. This is not typical King- No supernatural or monsters. A great thriller/ mystery.

Good read moves along at a good pace.

SPOILERS

By far the best story King has written in years. Hodges, Jerome and Holly are quirky, funny, and engaging. You will fall in love with Holly. The three make the best crime-fighting team ever. King at his absolute best; the older he gets, the more he goes back to what he does best-he can spin a story like few other contemporary American writers, and he had fun writing this one. There are a couple of sly references to his earlier work in this book that still have me laughing. Not all fun and games. Brady Hartfield is frightening mainly because he is so understated and so believable, and his mother is a nasty piece of work. A strong story full of well-written characters.

OMG. A crow takes the pitchers rubber and squawks triumphantly. A must-read.

Will never look at an ice cream truck with quite the same happiness again!
Really enjoyed this book though. Not normally a Stephen King reader, not a fan of horror, but this was different. An excellent mystery with characters you cared about. If you like this one, try his earlier mystery, Joyland.

Excellent read. Shorter and far more straightforward than a typical King novel, with not a single supernatural element in evidence, this felt a bit off-kilter but is probably the closest thing to a "normal" story Uncle Steve has written in many-a-year. Hugely enjoyable & highly recommended.

A little slow to start. Written more like a mystery than the usual Stephen King thriller. The ending left open. Will we hear from Brady again?

Bill Hodges is a memorable character in this novel: overweight but smart and likeable, he refuses to give up on an unsolved case involving a mass murderer. But it's Holly who really steals the show at the end: reclusive but courageous and computer saavy, it is she who incapacitates the killer.
