In Season 4, Raylan will start to pick at the thread of a cold case over 30 years in the making, unraveling a riddle that echoes all the way back to his boyhood and his criminal father's bad dealings. Meanwhile Boyd Crowder finds his grip on Harlan loosening due to a Pentecostal preacher with a penchant for theatrics and a knack for manipulation to rival his own.

Sometimes a solid show starts to get into a rut around its third of fourth season, but FX's "Justified" neatly avoided this trap. Like the other seasons, this one both has self-contained episodes and an overarching story about a mysterious criminal who everyone, from the mob to the marshals, starts looking for. Jim Beaver, who co-starred with Olyphant in "Deadwood," has a bigger role as a local sheriff, as does comedian Patton Oswalt. While it never fails to entertain as a sardonic cop show, it also has a more serious side and touches on family, loyalty, blood, sacrifice, the past, and other weighty subjects without ever being preachy. Great season.

The genius of Justified is its superbly executed, immersive, high rez local color, and genuine or not, it looks, sounds, and feels exactly right. By superbly executed I mean excellent and appropriate acting portraying the strongly local characters, and easily matched by the writing, which mashes up the genres of soap opera, comedy, action western, and crime drama and mixes it into its Southern Grotesque environment perfectly. It's a great series so far, and who cares whether this season or that was the best?

Season 1 and 3 were really great. But season 4 is/are the writers getting tired? And the actors "ad-libbing" their lines. okay, it will be awhile for season 5 to surface for those of us who do NOT have cable. and if as predictable as season 4, 5 will be a dud.

Agree with some that season 2 was the best and this one was almost as good, great performance by everyone and delivered with sharp southern drawls. My only gripe was hero Raylan looked scruffy all the time, merry times or otherwise.

much better than season 3 and the Lime House character! Wish Colt could have stayed around for another season even tho a bad guys he was interesting. Love the cowboy attitudes and wish there were more western series.

Personally, I’m glad to see less novel, more comic book; like “Sons of Anarchy”. Leave character to shows who want to do it (and do it well), like Mad Men, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, or The Killing. Justified’s become a stylized comic farce. Here in Season 4 they’ve got it the way they like it; a little farther from Elmore Leonard. Olyphant and Goggins contribute a lot to this style. I think character depth should be done within a more introspective setting than this show seems to want. Actually, I can’t remember the first couple seasons very well; maybe the character aspect was worthwhile w/o the ‘plot/kink/action/’ ‘genre’ that’s been created here and in many cable long-form series. >>>>> Yeah, I remember now: dialoge between drooling holler types that didin’t get off the ground; they couldn’t translate character-Elmore to a viable cable show so they expressed that sensability in a ‘Sons of Anarchy’ style (and are doing it very well, finally).

By far one of the best series on TV. The dialog is fast and often quirky and the story line action is continuous. Like Elmore Leonard's writing where the characters jump out of the page the show's characters jump off the screen.

This maybe my favourite season thus far of Justified.
Lots happening--more than a handful of unexpected twists & turns on every episode.I'm curious what the new season will bring.
Thoroughly enjoyed it!

A thirty year old cold case begins to unravel as Raylan Givens is front and center in the investigation. The mysterious Drew Thompson thought to be dead is very much alive and living somewhere in Harlan County. Raylan realizes that solving the cold case would be a huge career boost. However for various reasons the cold case is fraught with danger for Raylan and his pregnant ex-wife. The Detroit mob has a contract out on Drew Thompson that brings all sorts of bad people and trouble to Harlan County. Boyd, Johnny and Ava Crowder also manage to get into the middle of all the mayhem. The fourth season of Justified is exceptionally dramatic and complex and filled with plenty of violence.

Season 2 was the strongest season of this series. Since then it has continually gone downhill. The dialogue still has it moments but the humor is gone. This season was more violent and was more story driven rather than character driven. If this series wants to last they'll need more of the latter, better guest stars, and less convoluted yet bland plots. The passing of a regular character could've been handled so much better.

Boyd: Well cousin Johnny, Ava and I have been trying to put together a puzzle and it seems you have some of the missing pieces. Why don't you start from the beginning?-----------
Boyd: No one ever said runnin' a criminal enterprise was gonna be this hard.
Ava: They left that part out on career day. --------Boyd: Whole world's a tree Raylan. I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut.------http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Justified_%28TV_series%29#Season_4
