Item Details

Gabby daydreams to tune out her parents' arguments, but when her parents divorce and she begins a new school, daydreaming gets her into trouble. Her mother scolds her for it, her teacher keeps telling her to pay attention, and the other kids tease her ... until she finds a friend who also daydreams and her teacher decides to work a daydreaming-writing session into every school day. With a notebook "thick with daydreams," Gabby grows more confident about herself and her future. This verse novel poignantly celebrates the power of writing and the inspiration a good teacher can deliver.

To say I was skeptical of this book is putting it lightly. A book written in verse....? Ugh.

And I got it and said well at least it's really short (80 pages) and the covers pretty darn cool okay I'll give it a shot. So I start reading of this girl whose parents divorce and she moves to a new school and has problems with her habit of daydreaming. And I'm intraced by her voice. Beautifully rhythmic and illustrative rich in her words.

I'll give you a sample.....:
Explain this please
Mom names me for a
Creature with wings then wonders
what makes my thoughts fly

Students should be captivated by her simple, easy, yet thought provoking way she describes things in a poetic form. Plus I love the way that the teacher worked with her to stimulate her creativity and still help her keep on task. Her relationship with her mom is both realistic and tender. A sweet short read that makes you think. Good job Nikki Grimes!
